I awoke at 3:51 am to the sounds of a man screaming. I looked out my window, but in my blind state, I could only make out one man standing by his car and a van behind him. It's not unusual for this to happen as I live on a fairly busy street and from time to time, friends might stop their car by the college across the street and just yell at each other. I heard some profanity, however, and squinted to see what was happening. At first it sounded like road rage and then the guy gets back into his car and speeds very quickly away. I thought that was the end of that.
Pulling the covers over me again, I heard his car come speeding back. This time, I pulled myself out of the bed and put on my glasses. Like a voyeur, I peeked through my blinds in time to see this man scream at a young girl, who was crying beside her van, while making figure 8's on the near empty street. He would speed straight at her before veering away and he did this many times before he finally stopped his car and climbed into the passenger side of the girl's van.
A few minutes later, a marked police sedan, an unmarked police car, and a paddy-wagon pulled up next to the two vehicles. For the next half hour I watched as the police questioned the two people. The police even searched the girl's van. Finally, the girl left the scene, then the police, and lastly, the guy.
I was the one who called the authorities. I was afraid for the girl's safety. I was worried for the guy's safety. I was concerned for the public's safety in case this guy drove like a maniac, high on his anger. It looked like a couple of high school sweethearts who were in the middle of breaking up. Maybe the girl cheated on the guy, which would explain his anger.
I called because I knew the feeling of breaking up. I knew the feeling of being threatened by a boyfriend. I knew the feeling of him following through on his threats. It's happened not once, but three times. I don't want anyone else to go through what I felt.
Dear Lord, protect the hearts of young lovers. May you be with those who feel like the world is crashing down on them because they thought they would never love again. Show them what love truly is. Thank you for the police who tactfully dealt with this morning's situation. Thank you for D. Amen.
