I re-watched one of my favourite movies and in it, one of the characters says, "Because it's a book about a man who doesn't know he's about to die. And then dies. But if a man does know he's about to die and dies anyway. Dies- dies willingly, knowing that he could stop it, then- I mean, isn't that the type of man who you want to keep alive?"
Immediately, I think of Jesus and how despite the fact that He is innocent of all sin, has the power to come down from the cross, smite the soldiers that insult Him, He doesn't and walks to the cross willingly, knowing it's in God's will that He dies and He dies because He loves us so much. He "dies willingly, knowing that He could stop it." This tells us about the type of man, or God, Jesus is.
But, the action of continuing to war with one another, let hunger strike nations around the globe, step on each other's toes without apologizing, pirate movies and songs off the Internet, swearing at our parents, let toddlers play with guns, let a sexual predator go free based on good behaviour shown within confined walls, cheat on exams, think lustfully of our brother's wife, embezzle millions from shareholders, or crash airplanes into buildings full of people -- knowing that we, collectively and individually, have the power to stop these events from happening, but don't anyway -- that tells us the type of world we have become. Are we the type of people whom YOU want to keep alive?
Apparently, God does. What a mystery His love, grace, and mercy is.

I loved "stranger than fiction" too...definitely touched me more than I thought it would.
